Clijsters progresses in Wimbledon second round

Former top-ranked Kim Clijsters of Belgium started her Wimbledon 2012 Championships campaign on a positive note after winning her first round match – beating former number one Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-4.

Clijsters is playing in her last Wimbledon tournament, just her second time in the past six years and she said this would be her last trip as a competitor at the All England Club. She announced earlier this year that she would be retiring for good after the 2012 US Open. The Belgian had taken a hiatus from sport in 2007 but made a comeback in 2009 which bore good results for her – earning three more Grand Slam singles titles to increase her career haul to 4.

The 47th-ranked Belgian, unseeded in this year’s Wimbledon, seemed to have recovered from her injuries, breaking her opponent’s serve five times including the final game to clinch her eighth victory against Jankovic.

Clijsters has been battling with injury this year and has opted to skip the entire claycourt season including the Roland Garros tournament.
