Defending champ Petra Kvitova eases into Wimbledon 2nd round

Defending Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic overcame a shaky star to beat Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova 6-4, 6-4 in her opening round match at the All England Club.

The fourth-seeded was broken in her first service game and looked out of sorts during the early part of the game held at the Centre Court but managed to save break points and found her rhythm to win seven straight games to take the first set and have an early lead in the second set. A half-hour rain delay did not change the momentum and the Czech went on to win the match.

Kvitova made headlines last year after winning her first Grand Slam title by beating Maria Sharapova in the ladies’ singles final.
