Djokovic saves four match points to reach French Open semifinals

World number one Novak Djokovic was in a brink of defeat but miraculously came back, overcoming his nerves and the thousands of spectators who were rooting for his opponent to save four match points and force a fifth and deciding set and eventually defeated Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Roland Garros.

Djokovic is on course to get his fourth consecutive Grand Slam title, a feat that was not done by any male player in the past 43 years since Rod Laver achieved this in 1969.

The Serbian tennis star beat fifth-seeded Tsonga with the score of 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-1 to set up a French Open rematch against 16-time Slam winner and 2009 Roland Garros champion Roger Federer.

A year ago, Federer ended Djokovic’s 43-match winning streak at the semifinal stage at Roland Garros and this time, Djokovic is aiming not to let this happen.

Djokovic has won the 2011 Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open and successfully defended the Australian Open last January.

When asked how he managed to overcome such occasions where he was down several match points but eventually turned things around and win the match altogether, Djokovic said:

“There is really not any rational explanation or a word that can describe what you’re supposed to do when you’re match points down or when you’re losing and you’re very close to lose the match. It’s, I guess, trying to be mentally tough and believing in your shots.”
