Federer aiming for Olympic gold

Roger Federer has 16 tennis Grand Slam titles to his name but he has yet to win an Olympic tennis tournament, and he could get his last chance at London 2012.

The 30-year-old Swiss star has appeared in 23 Grand Slam finals and remarkably 18 of 19 finals from 2005’s Wimbledon to 2010’s Australian Open, so is certain to feature prominently in Betfair Olympics betting later this summer.

Federer has won six titles at Wimbledon and will be returning to his real love of grass courts as the London 2012 Olympic tennis tournament takes place on the hallowed turf of the All England Club.

He has had to wait for a 17th Grand Slam win thanks to the dominance of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, but his wait for another big win could come to an end in London – with the Olympics classed as the fifth major every four years.

Federer surprisingly lost to James Blake in the quarter-finals of the Beijing singles four years ago but you feel if he is to ever to win an Olympic gold, then the Betfair tennis community believe it will happen at SW19 – the scene of some of his best career performances.

He said recently: “I’m going to be super excited for the fourth time, but it is my fourth time so I think I’ll be a bit more relaxed going into this Olympics.

“Any medal would be a good one, but obviously in my situation, I’ve got to aim for gold.”

Federer could benefit from the fact Olympic tennis tournaments are based on a best-of-three-sets format until the final, as the veteran still has the ability to produce magic, especially on grass.

After such a prestigious career, it would be perfect for the Swiss star to add the one big trophy to his CV at London 2012.
