London Olympics 2012: Top-ranked Djokovic selected as Serbia’s Flag Bearer

World number one Novak Djokovic has been selected to carry the flag for Serbia during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics which begins next month.

“We are all very excited about the Olympic games in London, such a magnificent sporting event, and it goes without saying what a great honour it is for me to carry the flag for Serbia,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic was a bronze medalist in the singles competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He lost the semifinal match to eventual gold medalist Rafael Nadal and secured the bronze medal after beating James Blake of the United States for the third place battle.

In 2008, Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez carried the flags for their home countries during the opening ceremonies in Beijing and went on to win medals. Federer won the gold in doubles with teammate Stanislas Wawrinka while Gonzalez secured the silver medal in singles.
