Mardy Fish wins Wimbledon opener, first match since heart procedure

American Mardy Fish, playing for the first time in 2 and a half months, won his first round match at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday, beating Spain’s Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (1).

Fish had a medical procedure done on his heart earlier this year after noticing that his heart started racing at night. He had to pull out of the claycourt season, including the French Open.

Fish reached the final eight at the All England Club a year ago which helped propel his rankings to the world’s top ten for the first time. Failure to reach the quarterfinals this year would mean a significant drop in rankings after the tournament.
