Novak Djokovic feels confident about defending Wimbledon crown

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia feels that he has a great chance of successfully defending the Wimbledon Championships Men’s Singles crown and at the same time, the event at the All England Club that takes place this week is a great venue to jumpstart him bid for the Olympics which will start later next month at the same location.

“It is very emotional, because it is not just you who matters there, it’s the whole nation. So there is a huge excitement going on with all the tennis players prior to the Olympic Games,” Djokovic said. The Serbian tennis star is slated to carry his country’s flag during the opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics.

Djokovic starts his title defense on Monday against a former top-ranked player – Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain. Ferrer is a former French Open titlist who held the number one ranking in 2003.

“Knowing that I had great success in 2011 on Wimbledon grass actually gives me confidence before this year’s Wimbledon and Olympic Games.”

Last year, Djokovic dominated the season and won three of the four Grand Slam events of the year. In Wimbledon, the top-ranked Serb beat Rafael Nadal to cement his place as the world number one. He famously took some bits of grass from the Centre Court lawn after the victory and placed them in his mouth.
