Serena Williams wins opening match at 2012 Wimbledon

Former top-ranked Serena Williams avoided a second consecutive first round loss at a Grand Slam event by defeating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 6-4 in her opening match at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. Her older sister, Venus, was defeated the day before.

Williams was playing in Court 2 on Tuesday, the same venue where Venus, a five-time Wimbledon champion, was ousted yesterday. However, the four-time Wimbledon champion was in command of the match, breaking her opponent’s serve three times in the first set.

Williams has a 46-0 win-loss record in her first round matches in Grand Slam tournaments before this streak was broken last month at Roland Garros tournament where she was ousted by Virginie Razzano of France. Williams reached the fourth round at the All England Club last year.
