Venus Williams not yet retiring, says father Richard

Richard Williams, the father of the popular Venus and Serena Williams, said that his older daughter won’t be walking away from the game anytime soon.

Questions started swirling about Venus Williams’ possible retirement from the sport after she lost her opening round match against Russia’s Elena Vesnina, her worst defeat at this grasscourt Slam event since her debut in 1997. Williams is one of the most successful players at the All England Club – reaching the Ladies’ singles final eight times in the past twelve years – winning five of them and losing the three of them to younger sister Serena. She’s also won the Ladies’ doubles title four times with Serena.

Williams announced during the 2011 US Open that she’s been diagnosed by Sjogren’s Syndrome – an autoimmune illness that causes fatigue.

“Venus will be alright and Jehovah, that’s the god we serve, will take care of Venus. I think she is coming along great. She just has to have time to make things work out,” Richard Williams was quoted by Reuters.

Venus will still be in Wimbledon as she and Serena have entered the doubles event. The pair will attempt to win their fifth title. Also, the sisters will be back at the same venue next month to compete in the singles and doubles event at the London Olympics. The sisters are the defending Olympic champions of the doubles event.
