Wozniacki stumbles in Wimbledon first round against Eastbourne 2012 titlist

Austrian Tamira Paszek continued her magnificent run in the grasscourt season by producing one of the biggest upsets so far at the Wimbledon 2012 Championships by eliminating former number one and current seventh-seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the first round. Paszek was coming from a title victory at the Premier-level AEGON International in Eastbourne and seemed to carry the momentum at the All England Club.

Paszek managed to save two match points in the first two sets and went on to seal the victory in the third and deciding set 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4. The Austrian seemed to be performing better in grasscourts as evidenced by her past visits in Wimbledon. She was a former quarterfinalist in this Grand Slam tournament.

The opening round loss once again raises questions on Wozniacki’s form in the past few months. The Danish player has yet to win a title this season and this is coming from a player who has held the number one ranking during the 2010 and 2011 season. She dismissed insinuations that her relationship with golfer Rory McIlroy is affecting her game.
