The fourth seeded player is David Ferrer of Spain; fifth seed is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France with Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych, Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic and Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro completing the top eight seeds.

For the first time since its reinstatement as an Olympic sport in 1988, the tennis competitions will take place in grasscourts – at the All England Club – which just concluded hosting the 2012 Wimbledon Championships with Federer winning his seventh Wimbledon title and regaining the top ranking in the process. Federer is aiming to win his first Olympic gold in singles, already having won the doubles gold with compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The men’s doubles event is headed by American duo Mike and Bob Bryan.
