2012 Wimbledon Men’s Final: Roger Federer beats Djokovic to reach eighth final

Six-time champion Roger Federer beats defending champion Novak Djokovic to reach the Wimbledon 2012 Men’s Singles final on Friday, and the Swiss star is now just a win away from tying the all-time record set by Pete Sampras and also reclaiming the top ranking.

It was a high-quality tennis affair between the two rivals but it was Federer who emerged as victories in their very first grasscourt encounter. Federer has a 14-12 head to head series advantage against Djokovic prior to this semifinal match at the All England Club but it was their first time to meet at grasscourts. The top-ranked Serbian star has beaten Federer in their past three encounters including the semifinals of the 2012 Roland Garros final. The final score shows Federer winning in four sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Federer will face a first-time Wimbledon finalist on Sunday with home-bet Andy Murray playing against France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga later today.

If Federer wins the Sunday’s Men’s Singles final, he will tie Pete Sampras in terms of number of Wimbledon titles won at seven. The Swiss star will also increase the record for most number of Grand Slam singles titles won at 17 and will reclaim the top-ranking which is a significant achievement since Sampras has the record with the most number of weeks at number one (at 286 weeks), Federer will match that record and will overtake this longstanding record as well.
