Kazakh Shvedova beats French Open runner-up, achieves “Golden Set” feat

Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan became the first player in a Grand Slam tournament history to win every point of a set and it was rewarded with an upset win over French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy 6-0, 6-4 in the third round of Wimbledon 2012 Championships.

According to Wimbledon officials and the International Tennis Federation, Shvedova is just the second known tennis player in the Open Era to achieve this feat – the so-called “Golden Set” wherein a player wins 24 straight points. The streak was broken in the start of the second set when Errani won the first point on Shvedova’s serve and eventually marching on to a 2-0 lead.

However, Shvedova managed to regroup and the wildcard entrant hit several winners to beat the new top ten player in straight sets.

In 2006, Shvedova came close in achieving the “Golden Set” when she made 23 straight points against Amy Frazier but she eventually lost the match. This was in a hardcourt tournament in Memphis in the second round.

The first player known to have achieved this feat was Bill Scanlon when he won against Marcos Hocevar of Brazil at the Gold Coast Classic in Delray Beach in 1985.
