Maria Sharapova to lose top ranking after Wimbledon 2012 defeat

Roland Garros 2012 champion Maria Sharapova is expected to lose the number one ranking following her upset loss to Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round of the 2012 Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Championships.

Sharapova is aiming to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to win both the French Open and Wimbledon on the same year. She just completed a career Grand Slam by winning the claycourt Slam event in Paris a month ago and secure once again the top ranking.

She will lose the number one ranking to either Victoria Azarenka or Agnieszka Radwanska.

Her loss in the fourth round would mean significant loss in ranking points since she reached the Wimbledon final a year ago – losing the title match to Petra Kvitova.
