Olympics 2012: Venus Williams unpertubed about forgoing mixed doubles competition

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Venus Williams said that she’s not that concerned about not participating at the newly introduced mixed doubles tennis competitions at the 2012 London Olympics, citing that she’s already competing at the singles and doubles competition with younger sister, Serena.

At a recently concluded news conference in London, Venus said: “I think when we first heard about mixed we wanted to play for all three and knew we would really have to be at the ultimate fitness level to do so. But at the end of the day it’s going to be what our team captains want. Obviously we’re interested in seeing who could have the best chance to win because we really want to bring medals home. It’s about the betterment of the team and what would be the best for the USA.”

Williams is currently suffering from Sjogren’s Syndrome but is still an active competitor in the women’s tour. She won the singles gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and won the doubles Olympics gold in 2000 and 2008 with Serena.

The London Olympics 2012 begins on July 27.
