Roger Federer aims for Golden Slam with Olympic singles gold

Swiss star Roger Federer is at cloud nine at the moment. After winning his seventh Wimbledon title two weeks ago, Federer regained the top ranking and in the process broke the long-standing record of Pete Sampras’ 286 weeks’ stay as top ranked player. As of this writing, Federer is on his 288th week as world number one.

One record that Federer wants to achieve is the elusive “Golden Slam” wherein the player wins at least one of the four Grand Slam singles events and the singles gold medal at the Olympics. Only two male players have achieved this – Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal.

“It’s amazing that this is already my fourth Olympics,” Federer said.

It’s also important to mention that Federer is already a gold medalist at the Olympics. He won the men’s doubles event with Stanislas Wawrinka at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

“Always something special has happened at every Olympic Games where I have taken part and I have learned a lot – living in the village, carrying the flag, seeing huge press rooms, facing a lot of pressure, winning gold – you name it there were a lot of things I was able to take away from the Olympic Games and I hope it’s going to be something similar this time round,” he added.

Federer will be the heavy favorite to win this year’s men’s singles competition since the tennis matches will take place at the same courts where he just won his seventh Wimbledon title – at the All England Club.
