Sara Errani wins fourth title of season in Palermo

World number nine Sara Errani continues to impress at the 2012 season by winning her fourth title of the year at the XXC Italiacom Open. With the victory, she became the first Italian ever to win four WTA titles in a single season. The previous record holder for her home nation was her compatriot Roberta Vinci who won three titles last year.

Errani has had a magnificent run during the claycourt events, having won three in Acapulco, Barcelona and Budapest earlier this year before making her first Grand Slam singles final appearance at the French Open to barge her way to the world’s top ten for the first time. She went on to win the Roland Garros 2012 doubles event with Vinci.

Errani beat Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in Sunday’s final 6-1, 6-3.

“It wasn’t easy like the score looks – Barbara was playing very aggressively and it was tough for me,” Errani said.

“In some moments of the match I was a little bit nervous, and she was able to come back into the match at those times, but at the end of the match I played very well and was able to close it out,” she added.

Her strong run so far this season could mean a place at the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul, Turkey for both singles and doubles events. However, the Italian said that she’d want to improve her results on other surfaces – in grass and hardcourts.
