Serena Williams continues streak after Wimbledon 2012 win, defends Stanford title

This is the tournament where it all began, the comeback of Serena Williams. Just a few days after winning the 2012 Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles and Doubles titles, Williams flew back to the United States to participate at the Bank of the West Classic as defending champion and on Sunday, the visit paid off with a title.

Williams did not lose a set all the way to the final where she faced young American Coco Vandeweghe. After a tight first set, Williams breezed through to the second with powerful serves and booming shots to record a 7-5, 6-3 victory. This is her 43rd career title and is now tied with older sister Venus with the most number of singles titles won.

The title win means that Williams takes an early lead at the Emirates Airline US Open 2012 Series. Williams was the winner last year and took an additional $500,000 on top of her US Open 2011 runner-up finish.
