Serena Williams to defend Standford title this week

Newly-crowned Wimbledon 2012 Ladies’ Singles champion Serena Williams continues her quest in the sport by participating at the 2012 Bank of the West Classic as the tournament’s defending champion. It can be remembered that this is the very first event since her comeback from a two-year injury hiatus from tennis where she went all the way to the title. She was ranked 169th last year when she won this title.

Now she’s back this week at the tournament’s top seed. With a first round bye, her scheduled first match will be on Wednesday.

Joining Williams in this tournament are last year’s finalist Marion Bartoli, third-seed Dominika Cibulkova and fourth-seed Jelena Jankovic. Both Cibulkova and Jankovic are trying to bounce back from their opening round losses at Wimbledon two weeks ago.
