Williams sisters unseeded in doubles competition

Defending Olympic doubles team Venus and Serena Williams will be unranked in the upcoming doubles competition at the 2012 London Olympics. This following the strict implementation of the seedings based on WTA tour rankings. The singles seedings are based on current WTA rankings while the doubles seedings will be based on combined rankings of each teams, with each player given the opportunity to use the higher of either their singles and doubles rankings.

The Williams sisters have been inactive in the doubles competition this year but went on to win their fifth Wimbledon doubles title two weeks ago. The duo has been a formidable force in doubles despite not actively participating for the entire season.

The top seeds in women’s doubles are Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber of the United States followed by Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy. The third seeds are Russians Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova and Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka are the fourth seeds.
