Andy Murray gears up for 2012 US Open after London gold medal win

The euphoria of winning the Olympic singles gold medal in London continues for Andy Murray and his team but there’s still so much work to do that it is time to get back on track and gear up for the 2012 US Open.

After winning the singles gold medal in London, Murray opted to withdraw at the Rogers Cup 2012 tournament to have enough rest time for the Cincinnati Masters 2012 which begins this week. The fourth-ranked Briton is the defending champion of this hardcourt tournament.

“Going onto a new surface, that presents new challenges. I felt good after winning the gold medal, but coming over to play on hard courts, your body starts to hurt a little bit, you’re sore in the joints,” Murray said earlier last week after deciding to pull out of the Toronto Masters.

“You have to work on different shots as well. So that can occupy your mind a bit. You’re not feeling great straight away. Switching surfaces is a new challenge, something that’s taken me a few days to adjust,” he added.

Murray is a two-time US Open finalist and he has yet to win a Grand Slam title but the fortunes may change now that he’s now that self belief that he could overtake the top three players in the world after his impressive performance at the London Olympics.
