Andy Murray wins Olympic gold, denies Federer the Golden Career Slam

Great Britain’s Andy Murray has served his revenge against top-ranked Roger Federer by defeating the latter in the Olympic gold medal match at the All England Club. It can be remembered that this very stage last month, Federer reduced Murray in tears as the Swiss star won his seventh Wimbledon title. However, the British number one made sure that it won’t happen again this time in front of his home crowd and that he won’t be denied the chance to win a major title in his career.

Murray won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and most surprisingly, the match only lasted one hour and 56 minutes on Centre Court at the All England Club. With the victory, Murray became the first British male player to win a singles gold medal in the past 104 years.

Murray said that this is “the biggest win of my life. This week’s been absolutely incredible, I’ve had a lot of fun. I felt so fresh on the court today. I didn’t feel nervous really at all apart from at the beginning of the match. The support’s been unbelievable.”
During the presentations of the medals, IOC Executive Board member Rene Fasel of Switzerland and International Tennis Federation President Ricci Bitti were there to hand over the amazing achievements to the top three players at the London 2012 Olympic Games – Andy Murray (Gold); Roger Federer (Silver) and Juan Martin Del Potro (Bronze).
