Cincinnati Masters 2012: Novak Djokovic can overtake Federer for top ranking

Novak Djokovic will have a chance to reclaim the number one ranking this week at the Cincinnati Masters 2012 if he performs better than top-ranked Roger Federer this week. Djokovic successfully defended the Rogers Cup title on Sunday to still maintain the tight 75 point difference against Federer.

However, should Roger Federer reach the Cincinnati Masters final, he is guaranteed to retain the top-ranking which almost assured him the top seeding at the US Open 2012 tournament which begins in two weeks’ time.

Federer regained the number one ranking after his 17th Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships in July and effectively broke the long-standing record of Pete Sampras in most number of weeks atop the world’s rankings.

In order for Djokovic to become number one, he must at least reach the final and that Federer loses before the quarterfinals. Djokovic has 600 points to defend this week since he reached the final last year (retired against Andy Murray) while Federer only needs to defend 180 points (since he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Tomas Berdych).

A Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer Cincinnati Masters 2012 final match is possible since both are holding the top two seeding this week.
