The final tennis Slam of the year gets underway in New York today, and Juan Martin Del Potro is the dark horse who has what it takes to rock the boat.
The 23-year-old Argentine has sparkled at times in his brief career but he now is ready to break into the top four of world tennis. Del Potro has already conquered Flushing Meadows, back in 2009, beating his hero, Roger Federer.
Federer, back at number one in the world, following yet another Wimbledon title, was humbled by Murray so emphatically at the Olympics that it appears time is catching up on the 31-year-old.
No longer can he rely on his glorious technique, which for so long has delivered what seemed like effortless Slams.
Murray, on the other hand, still does not have the mental fortitude to win a Slam. His recent Wimbledon final defeat to Federer proved that, when it comes to the crunch, he still lacks the nerve, despite having the ability.
His record now stands at four Grand Slam finals, four defeats, and one set won; it is simply not good enough.
Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the final Slam of the year, due to injury, which just leaves current world number two, Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian player had the time of his life last year, picking up his first Wimbledon title. He will now defend his US Open title this month. The 25-year-old is currently playing well, having won the recent Toronto Masters, but has not looked like the unbeatable player that we witnessed in 2011.
However, Del Potro, who has suffered with injuries in recent years, will be the one to watch at the US Open, and, if he overcomes Djokovic, then the big server will come away with his second Grand Slam.
