Rogers Cup 2012: Novak Djokovic won’t overtake Federer despite title win

A Rogers Cup 2012 title-win won’t be enough for Serbian Novak Djokovic to reclaim the top ranking by Monday’s updated rankings due to the fact that he’s the defending champion of this tournament, currently being held in Toronto. This means that he will just retain his current total ranking points should he win this event.

Roger Federer took over the top ranking from Djokovic after the latter’s one year of being at the top of the world’s rankings. This was made possible after Federer won the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. The lead between the two widened after Federer claimed a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics while Djokovic was shut out in the medal matches after losing in the semifinals to Andy Murray and the bronze medal match against Juan Martin Del Potro.

Federer has not participated at the 2012 Rogers Cup but is expected to participate at the Cincinnati Masters 2012 which begins on Monday.
