Rogers Cup 2012: Olympic gold medalist Murray pulls out, cites knee injury

London Olympics 2012 men’s singles gold medalist Andy Murray has pulled out of the 2012 Rogers Cup, just hours before he’s scheduled to play against home favorite Milos Raonic on Centre Court. The British world number four stated that he has to withdraw with left knee injury which leaves fans wondering if he’ll be back in competition next week at the Cincinnati Masters where he’s the defending champion of that ATP Masters 1000 series event.

Last week, Murray defeated Roger Federer to win the Olympic singles gold and avenged the defeat last month at the 2012 Wimbledon final. Federer and Rafael Nadal have already announced their withdrawal from the event weeks ago.

The withdrawal meant that Raonic has booked his place in the quarterfinals.

“I don’t want to go full out and possibly do more damage. That was why I decided not to play,” Murray said.

The top-seed of the 2012 Rogers Cup is defending champion Novak Djokovic and there’s no indication yet that the Serbian world number two, who lost his bronze medal match at the Olympics, will continue competing.

As for Raonic, this is not how he wanted to win the match but in the long run, he says it is still a good thing.

“Obviously, (the match) was something I was really looking forward to,” he said.

“It’s sort of like an unpleasant thing but at the same time it’s a good thing. It’s my first quarterfinal in a Masters (1000) and to be at home is pretty special. I guess there is a give and take with it,” he added.
