Rogers Cup 2012: Petra Kvitova reigns in Montreal

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova won her first title of the season by winning the prestigious Rogers Cup title in Montreal on Monday. The 2011 Wimbledon champion beat 2011 French Open winner Li Na of China 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. The win places Kvitova back to the elite world’s top five players once the updated WTA rankings have been released.

“The first set was a really big fight – every game was very close. Maybe I was a little bit lucky to win the first set,” Kvitova said.

“She played very well in the second set. She was very aggressive without any mistakes,” she added.

Kvitova has not reached a WTA final this season before her title-winning run in Montreal. However, she’s reached the semifinals of the Australian and French Opens and reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon 2012 tournament which kept her ranking within the world’s top 10.

This is Kvitova’s eighth career WTA title.
