The highly anticipated Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova Gold Medal match at the 2012 London Olympics will take place later today, Saturday August 4 after both WTA stars trounced their opponents in straight sets. Williams, the 2012 Wimbledon champion, dismissed top-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-2 while Sharapova ousted fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-3.
Williams is the heavy favorite to win her first Olympic gold medal in singles. The 14-time Grand Slam champion has already amassed two gold medals in doubles with sister Venus and a win on Saturday would make her the only player to achieve the feat of having completed a career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles. Sharapova is also aiming for a career Golden Slam after her title victory at the French Open this year.
