Italians post upset wins at US Open 2012 women’s singles

Doubles team players Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani posted significant upset wins at the 2012 US Open women’s singles competition and they’re facing an upcoming battle against each other in the quarterfinals.

Errani, who made it in the world’s top ten after a runner-up finish at the French Open singles against Maria Sharapova, beat sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany 7-5, 6-3. Vinci, on the other hand, spoiled Agnieszka Radwanska’s bid to become world number one for the first time with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against the second-seed.

“Our friendship won’t change, no matter what, no matter who wins,” said Vinci.

“It definitely won’t be an easy match from a mental perspective. We know each other well. We practice together often. We play doubles together. We know everything about each other,” she added.

Both Vinci and Errani won the French Open ladies’ doubles title in May after dominating the claycourt season.
