Rafael Nadal to miss next two months of competition, including Davis Cup

An ongoing rehabilitation plan for his left knee has led world number three Rafael Nadal to make a decision to miss the next two months of tennis competition, which means that he won’t be participating at the upcoming Davis Cup competition between Spain and United States.

“I have missed the Olympics and the US Open in the last few weeks, two of the most important tournaments of the year that I really wanted to play,” Nadal said in a statement released Monday morning.

“I really want to be back competing and enjoying the tennis tour, but I have many years in front of me and my knee needs some rest. I will be back when I have no pain and am able to compete with guarantee,” he added.

Nadal has been out of tennis action since his surprise second round loss at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. He missed the London 2012 Olympics where he was the defending gold medalist in singles. He also missed the North American hardcourt season, including the ongoing US Open 2012 Tennis Championships.

“I feel better after the meeting with my doctors and happy knowing that the evolution of the past weeks has been positive and surgery has been avoided. I will continue to work with the plan my doctors have established to be able to compete as soon as possible in the right conditions,” Nadal said.
