Roger Federer to play in Davis Cup world group playoff

World number one Roger Federer will reportedly play for his nation in the upcoming Davis Cup world group relegation play-off against Netherlands this weekend.

Sandra Perez, the spokeswoman for Swiss Tenns, said that Federer will be arriving in Amsterdam on September 12, Wednesday and is slated to play one of the opening singles matches on Friday. She added that Federer is ready to take part in the tournament.

The world group relegation matches will take place in outdoor claycourts, a sudden change for the Swiss star considering that he’s played the past three monts on grass and hardcourts. Federer did not confirm during his postmatch interview after a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to Tomas Berdych at the US Open 2012 whether he’ll take part at the Davis Cup tournament.

However, he did say that he’ll be focusing more on trying to end the year as the top-ranked player. He has several points to defend during the fall season.

The winner of the Switzerland vs Netherlands Davis Cup match will stay at the 16-nation World Group.
