Serena Williams blanks out Hlavackova for US Open quarterfinals berth

Tournament favorite Serena Williams had a rather quick fourth round match at the 2012 US Open with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Czech player Andrea Hlavackova. The match took less than an hour and now she’s booked her place in the quarterfinals of this hardcourt grand Slam tournament.

Hlavackova, a noted doubles specialist, is in the US Open fourth round for the first time. She’s been in the qualifying rounds in her past five tries but never made it the main draw. The Czech admitted that there’s really not much she can do against the 14-time singles Grand Slam champion.

“Singles is completely different,” she said.

“My coach warned me to not go on the court and play for a score,” Hlavackova said,

“I was in the match. I was trying to figure out how to win. And when it was, like, 6-love, 4-love, 30-love, I was thinking, ‘Well, I’m not playing for a score, but one game wouldn’t hurt,” she added.

Up next for Williams is former world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia who has made it to her first major quarterfinal since 2008.
