US Open 2012 Andy Murray through to fifth Grand Slam final

World number four Andy Murray will now his fifth chance to become the first British man to win a Grand Slam singles title in 76 years after progressing to the US Open 2012 Men’s Singles Final on Saturday. Murray defeated Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6. Berdych eliminated top-ranked Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.

“It was brutal,” Murray said.

“Hard to describe. You had to focus for every single point. … Some of the hardest conditions I’ve ever played in, for sure, and I come from Scotland, so that’s saying something,” he added.

The match took 3 hours and 58 minutes to complete.

The weather has delayed the start of the match and after Murray’s victory, the match between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer was postposed due to rain with Ferrer leading in the first set 5-2. This means that the final is once again scheduled on a Monday (September 10, 2012).

Murray won the gold edal at the London Olympics last month and reached the Wimbledon final as well. Due to the absence of world number three Rafael Nadal in this tournament, the British tennis star will have a good chance to overtake him in the rankings in the next few weeks.
