Williams sisters ousted by Russian duo in US Open 2012 doubles

The Williams sisters made an early exit at the doubles competition of the US Open 2012 Championships following their third round loss against Russians Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko. The Russians progressed to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against the sisters. This was a perfect revenge for both Petrova and Kirilenko after the second round defeat against the sisters at the Wimbledon Championships despite leading 4-1 in the third set. The sisters went on to win the grasscourt Slam title. At the London Olympics, the teams competed against each other once more in the semifinals with both Serena and Venus Williams claiming the victory and eventually getting the gold medal.

When asked about their victory in their third meeting against the Williams sisters, Kirilenko said that it felt great.

“It was a good victory for us,” added Petrova.

“We played clean tennis, very consistent,” said former top five singles player Petrova, who was defeated in the fourt round of singles by Maria Sharapova.
