Heather Watson wins first WTA title in Osaka

Britain’s Heather Watson became the first female tennis player in her country in 24 years to win a WTA title after she captured the HP Open 2012 title in Osaka on Sunday. She edged out another first-time finalist – Chinese Taipei’s Chang Kai-Chen.

What’s interesting with the final between these two players is that they’ve never gone past the quarterfinals of any WTA tournament before this and they’ve started this event as unseeded players.

“I was in the changing room afterwards, changing my clothes, and I thought to myself, ‘Did I really win?’ So it’s just starting to settle in,” Watson said.

“I’ve worked so hard for this moment my whole career – that’s why I practiced so hard, ran all those miles and lifted all those weights, for moments like this,” she added.
