Qatar Airways becomes title sponsor for Tournament of Champions 2012

The year-end Tournament of Champions will be having a major sponsor – Qatar Airways. The Bulgarian Tennis Federation revealed that the global airline is the major sponsor of the event which will now be called the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions Sofia.

“We are thrilled that Qatar Airways has signed up as title sponsor of the Tournament of Champions,” said WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster.

“Qatar Airways is a truly world class airline with a wonderful history of support for professional tennis, including the Qatar Ladies Open, our WTA Premier event in Doha. I congratulate the Bulgarian Tennis Federation for securing such a premium partner for the first staging of this event in Sofia,” she added.

The touranment will feature six highest ranked winners of International-level tournaments this season, not including those who qualified at the WTA Championships, plus two wildcard entrants. Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova and Russia’s Maria Kirilenko have secured these wildcard entries.

The total prize money for this tournament is $750,000. The six qualified players will be determined by the end of the last International event in Luxembourg. The Bulgarian city is slated to host this event from this year until 2014.
