Richard Gasquet wins Thailand Open 2012 title

Frenchman Richard Gasquet won his seventh career ATP Tour title on Sunday after clinching the Thailand Open title. The second-seeded beat compatriot Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-1 to secure $99,645 in prize money and 250 ranking points. This makes Gasquet a strong contender to secure one of the remaining slots for the year-end ATP World Tour Finals which takes place in November 2012.

“I played against a French player who is also my friend so of course it a little bit strange but for me it’s a title and I’ve had some tough matches this week so I’m very happy to win,” Gasquet said after the win.

“The people here are very nice, the crowd was very nice. The night I played against [Grigor] Dimitrov it was late, but the people stayed and cheered for me so it’s more reason for me to come back next year and defend my title,” he added.

Simon earned $52,390 and 150 ranking points. The former Thailand Open champion said that he wanted win the title but fell short.

“I was playing some of the best tennis I ever played yesterday [against Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia] and today I just couldn’t play at all. Thierry [Tulasne] was here to watch, but it was our last week together so I really wanted to win,” he said.

The doubles title was secured by Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei and Danai Udomchoke of Thailand.
