World number one Roger Federer decided to skip the Paris Masters tournament this week following a tough defeat at the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament on Sunday. The Swiss maestro lost 4-6, 7-6, 6-7 to Juan Martin Del Potro after a 2-hour, 44 minute marathon. This also ended Del Potro’s six-match losing streak against the top-ranked player.
Federer said that it is the “only right decision” to take as it would be “just too much” to play in Paris.
“I had one of the best weeks of my life last year,” Federer said.
“The fans were amazing and the last thing I want to do is mislead any fans. This is really just a last-minute decision,” he added.
As defending champion of the Paris event, Federer is projected to lose 1,000 ranking points for skipping the event. This will most likely mean that Novak Djokovic will end the season as world number one.
The Paris Masters 2012 tournament begins on Monday, October 29.
