Serena Williams to end 2012 season as world number three

Her inactivity during the fall season meant that Serena Williams will have no chance of ending the 2012 season as world number one. As of this writing, she’s reached the final of the WTA Championships and will face Maria Sharapova for the title. Ending the season as world number one is Victoria Azarenka and whatever the outcome of the final will be, Sharapova will end as number two.

Williams dominated the second half of the 2012 season – winning the singles and doubles titles in Wimbledon and the London Olympics and winning the singles title at the US Open. She’s won 47 of her past 49 matches.

Despite being third ranked, Williams is still touted as the player of the season, having a perfect record against the world’s top 2 this season.
