The 2012 WTA Championships Istanbul begins today and the world’s top eight singles players plus two alternates and four top doubles teams are in the Turkish capital to compete for lucrative cash prizes and important ranking points that will solidify their place in the 2013 season. Currently at the top of the women’s rankings is Belarussian Victoria Azarenka.
Azarenka has played 75 matches so far this year and has won 67 (89%). She has the most matches played (and won) this 2012. She won her first Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open and has won five more titles this season [Sydney, Doha, Indian Wells, Beijing and Linz). Her performances in other Grand Slam events have been impressive as well. She reached the 4th round at the French Open, semifinals at Wimbledon and final at the US Open. She’s also won the bronze medal at the London Olympics.
Azarenka only needs to win two matches at the WTA Championships Istanbul in order to end the year as world number one.
