The Czech Republic is just a win away from successfully defending the Fed Cup title after Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova won their respective opening singles matches in straight sets against first-time finalist Serbia.
Safarova drew first blood first after beating Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-3 while Petra Kvitova outplayed Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 6-1.
Kvitova, who had to pull out of the season-ending WTA Championships last week due to health issues, did not show signs of it in her match against the former top-ranked Czech.
“Actually, I was surprised by how I played. I didn’t know what I can expect from myself on the court,” Kvitova said.
The Wimbledon 2011 champion could clinch the victory on Sunday should she win her match against Ivanovic.
