David Ferrer to become world number four after Australian Open 2013

David Ferrer will now become the top-ranked Spaniard on the ATP World Tour once the rankings are released on Monday, January 28. Despite this new development, Ferrer is quick to state that he doesn’t consider himself as part of the “Big Four.”

The “Big Four” – composed of Novak Djokovic of Serbia, Roger Federer of Switzerland, Rafael Nadal of Spain and Andy Murray of Great Britain – have been called as such because they have dominated the ATP Tour – from Grand Slam events to ATP 1000 Masters tournaments.

By virtue of having performed well at the Australian Open 2013, Ferrer will become world number four, overtaking his more popular compatriot Rafael Nadal. Nadal will lose the ranking points he’s earned by reaching the Australian Open final a year ago.

“I am top four because Rafael has been injured a long time. It’s true,” Ferrer admitted.

“I think the top four, they are better. It’s my opinion,” he added.

Ferrer was straightforward in answering why it is hard for him to win a Grand Slam singles title.

“It’s very difficult for me to win a Grand Slam because there are the top four. At this time they are better than the other players,” he said.

Ferrer will have a chance to break the drought at the Melbourne Park. He just reached the Australian Open 2013 semifinals after beating compatriot Nicolas Almagro in a tight five-set match. He will next face two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
