Elena Vesnina wins first WTA singles title in Hobart

Russian Elena Vesnina finally won her first WTA singles title after having gone 0-6 in her past six finals on Saturday. Vesnina defeated defending champion Mona Barthel 6-3, 6-4 to seal her first singles title at the Moorilla Hobart International.

Vesnina has reached the finals in Auckland and New Haven in 2009, Istanbul and Tashkent in 2010, Charleston in 2011 and in Budapest last year.

“The biggest difference today was I served better in the key moments,” Vesnina said.

“Even with the wind I was just pushing myself to serve harder and with more spin – I was telling myself even if I hit double faults it’s okay, just don’t let her control the points. Being aggressive the whole point was my plan for today, starting with the serve and return, but also from the groundstrokes and going to the net,” she added.

Spaniards Garbiñe Muguruza and María-Teresa Torró-Flor won the the doubles title after defeating Timea Babos and Mandy Minella 63 76(5).
