Gael Monfils double faults but still wins at Australian Open 2013

Frenchman Gael Monfils continued his impressive comeback from a knee injury that sidelined him the most part of 2012 by reaching the third round of the Australian Open 2013. It was a dramatic victory of sorts since he had to overcome the spirited challenge from Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6, 4-6, 0-6, 6-1, 8-6.

While serving for the match, Monfils squandered five match points by double faulting but managed to finally executive a serve that is unreturnable for the Taiwanese opponent and eventually seal the victory in three hours and 37 minutes.

“It was more like I need to ace because I knew it would be double fault for sure,” said Monfils, who served 11 aces and 14 double faults in the fifth set alone.

Monfils is slated to meet compatriot Gilles Simon, the Australian Open 2013 14th seed, in the third round.
