Grigor Dimitrov to clinch career-high ranking after Brisbane performance

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov has something to be happy about despite having lost the Brisbane International title match on Sunday. His ranking is projected to rise to a career-high number 39 on January 7, 2013 rankings.

The young tennis star lost to defending champion and world number three Andy Murray 6-7, 4-6. He earned 150 ranking points and $41,540 for his runner-up finish.

Dimitrov said that he was not overwhelmed having to contest his first ATP title against Murray, who won the Olympic singles gold medal and the US Open title in 2012.

“He’s a top guy, so he has his rhythm, his routine on court. He pulled out some really, really good shots when he had to so I didn’t feel that I was far, far from winning the set or even the match,” Dimitrov said.

He added that he’d still need a “couple of years” on tour to deliver stronger results, even make it past the first week of Grand Slam events.
