Kimiko Date-Krumm defies age, reaches Australian Open 2013 third round

42-year old Kimiko Date-Krumm defied the age-odds after winning her Australian Open 2013 second round match against former world number 11 Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2, 7-5. The Japanese veteran has overcome a tough challenge from former world number four Nadia Petrova of Russia in the first round.

Date-Krumm is the oldest woman in the draw but she’s someone not to be understimated, considering that she’s won her two matches in straight sets. She’s had success at the Melbourne Park, having reached the semifinals back in 1994 – losing to eventual champion Steffi Graf.

“It was a big challenge for me because my body, after when I was leading 3?0, suddenly something big and strong on my back or something happen, and I felt so heavy my body and I couldn’t move. But I tried to push myself,” Date-Krumm commented about her match.

Date-Krumm will next face Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia in the third round.
