Polish player Jerzy Janowicz overcomes on-court meltdown at Australian Open 2013

Jerzy Janowicz of Poland regained his composure just in time to survive a five-set marathon match and beat India’s Somdev Devvarman 6-7, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, 7-5 in the second round of competitions at the Australian Open 2013. However, what grabbed the headlines was his on-court meltdown after losing the first set to his opponent.

The 24th-seeded was seen exploding with rage over a line call during the tiebreak and in the process hit the umpire’s chair with his tennis racquet and threw his water bottle across the tennis court. His opponent went on to win the tiebreak at 12-10 and also took the second set as well.

However, he regrouped just in time to take the next two sets – only surrending one game. The fifth and final set was an exciting one with Janowicz sealing the victory after 161 minutes.

Janowicz gained notice in 2012 after reaching the Paris Masters final, beating five top 20 players along the way. In 2012, the Polish player had to give up his qualifying spot at the Australian Open since he couldn’t afford to make the trip Down Under.
