Serena Williams can still become world number one despite Australian Open loss

World number three Serena Williams can still reclaim the world number one ranking after the Australian Open 2013 tournament despite being bounced out in the quarterfinals by 19-year old Sloane Stephens. Here are the scenarios that will make this possible:

* Williams will reclaim number one if: both defending champion Victoria Azarenka and defending runner-up Maria Sharapova lose their Australian Open semifinal matches.

* Williams will become world number one if Sharapova loses her semifinal match and Azarenka fails to win the Australian Open title

However, should Sharapova reach the final and Azarenka loses her semifinal match then it will be Sharapova who will become world number one. If it will be a replay of last year’s final (Azarenka vs Sharapova), then the winner will become the world number one.
