The world number one ranking is up for grabs in the WTA Tour and the world’s top three – Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are on course to take this honor at the conclusion of the Australian Open 2013.
Here are the clear-cut scenarios as to who will become the world number one after the Australian Open 2013:
* World number one and defending champion Victoria Azarenka can retain her ranking by winning Australian Open 2013
* World number two Maria Sharapova can become world number one if she wins the title and Williams loses in the quarterfinals
* World number three Serena Williams will become world number one if she makes it to the semifinals or final as long as Sharapova does not win the title
Based on the scenarios, Williams has the best chance of becoming world number one since both Azarenka and Sharapova have to defend the ranking points they’ve earned as champion and runner-up respectively. Williams lost in the fourth round last year.
Williams and Azarenka are project to meet in the semifinals. Whoever wins this match will most certainly be assured of clinching the top ranking.
