GB Women begin Fed Cup Climb

Great Britain’s Fed Cup team have made a successful start to their Euro/Africa Group I campaign after whitewashing Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 in their first pool match in Israel.

Team GB, led by tennis coach, Judy Murray, are aiming to achieve promotion to the World Group II by the end of 2013 and got their campaign off to a good start with this victory.

It was a resounding performance and puts the team in good stead to go one better than last year and gain promotion out of Euro/Africa Group I, where they lost in a playoff 4-1 to Sweden last year.

Both Anne Keothavong and Heather Watson’s singles performances will delight coach Murray, who must be expecting big things from her players this season. While Keothavong ground down Dea Herdzelas 6-4 6-2, Watson overcame the tougher task of Anita Husaric 6-3 6-4.

That left the doubles with responsibility of completing the whitewash and Laura Robson and Johanna Konta proved a formidable pair, not dropping a game in two sets to win 6-0 6-0.

Fans placing a tennis bet  know all about Robson’s clinical game, but Konta’s performance was a pleasant surprise and should give the team a boost ahead of their second pool game: against Portugal on Friday.

With the Portuguese suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to fellow Pool B counterparts Hungary, Great Britain have a real chance to take a second victory on Friday before facing the Hungarians in a top-of-the-table clash this weekend.

Already favourites to top the pool on Betfair, Great Britain are in unfamiliar waters but under Murray’s stewardship should progress with ease.

Both Watson and Robson – the golden girls of Great Britain’s new generation – have committed themselves to the Fed Cup this season and with the pair at a level that earns top-40 rankings in the WTA, Team GB’s future in this tournament and other tennis events  looks increasingly bright.
